Chapter 16

Kenya

“This isn’t just an attack on religion,” Nix snarled, sitting on my couch with his arms behind his head and his feet crossed on my coffee table. “Your council is out to destroy families as they exist because it’s getting in the way of their agenda.”

I flung my hands onto my chest. “My council? What do I have to do with all this? Healthy children and a decrease in healthcare expenses are a good thing, Nix.”

“And I agree with that, but not at the cost of treating others like animals and destroying marriages. A bond between a man and a woman, which has been around for ages.”

“The Clans treat each other like animals all the time,” I said, pressing my lips together right after but it was already too late. Nix’s posture had gone from angry to strangle-me furious, with his clenched fists twitching on his lap. I dropped my gaze and added a quick, “Marriage is a social construct, and neither holy nor natural.”

He tapped his thumb against his thigh, his expression almost as tight as his voice. “Not everything back home is bad, you know. We treasure our women. And yeah, we get in fights over them because of how precious they are. They are fierce and strong. Like you.”

My laugh broke through the tension. “You think I’m fierce and strong?”

“You’re stronger than you think. And got a temperament every clansman would love to tame.” A sexy grin formed on his mouth, and he leaned forward, folding his hands between his knees. “And you’re gorgeous and fierce when I’m between your legs.”

“That must be the most romantic thing a man ever told me.”

“It’s the first romantic thing anyone has ever said to you.” He rose and walked over to me, taking my hand into his. His voice dropped into something so husky and alluring, I was sure that tone was forbidden inside the Districts. “Not good enough? How ’bout this: I really like you. Sometimes I think I want to merge just for the sake of staying here with you.”

My heart drummed so loud, I cleared my voice trying to camouflage it. “I like you, too.”

Not sure what scared me more. That it was true, or that I had said it out loud. We didn’t repeat whatever had happened on the couch a few days ago, but things were different between us now. Softer. Gentler.

We spent most evenings watching movies together or playing board games, our closeness growing into something so familiar, I feared giving up on it once Nix left.

“Tell me more about your women,” I said.

He stepped up behind me and wrapped me in his arms. “Let’s see. My dad made sure each girl gets a thorough education in one-on-one combat as well as weapon training. My sister is an impressive fighter.”

“But you said she still can’t take you down.”

“That’s only because my education was very physical,” he said with a sigh, with a long break before he continued as if his mind had drifted off for a moment.
